A performance dedicated to remembering the past whilst simultaneously celebrating
the present, Starbound 15 represents a musical theatre marvel, with plenty of
distinctive songs, elaborate choreography and exceptional vocal talent to keep
audiences enthralled.

As its name suggests, the Starbound performance has made its mark for fifteen
years now, providing young individuals (aged 14-21) with the opportunity to
showcase their musical talent in a collaborative and passionate twelve-day
workshop. Led by Jason and Georgina Parker, the Starbound experience has
explored various realms of the musical theatre industry, paying tribute to the classics
in addition to acknowledging the modern works of today. This year, Starbound 15
incorporated the talent of over eighty enthusiastic performers as well as including a
special appearance of Starbound alumni, some of whom have continued their
musical career as their predominant profession.
With over twenty songs present in the two-hour run-time, it was pleasing to be able
to witness a divergence in theme, pace, style and history for each of the individual
numbers. Standouts for the performance included the vibrant and vivacious “Show
Off” (from the 2006 musical, The Drowsy Chaperone), the passionate and witty
“What a Game” (from the 1998 musical, Ragtime) as well as the colourful and
powerful finale for the performance, “Come Alive” (from the 2018 musical film, The
Greatest Showman).

Other musicals highlighted in the show included Hamilton: An American Musical,
Mean Girls and Hair, each of which had two or more songs showcased. The
performance of “Seasons of Love” (from the 1996 musical, Rent) by the Starbound
alumni was a heart-warming inclusion, evidently portraying how the Starbound
experience can continue far beyond closing night. As referenced in the program,
62% of the current cast plan to pursue a career of performance, whether that be
voice, dance or acting or perhaps the triple threat.

For a performance composed, collated and produced in under two weeks to have a
professional result is nothing less of remarkable. With sharp choreography, vivid
lighting and complex costumes, there was never a lack of interest with what was
happening on stage. The extensive production team behind Starbound 15, inclusive
of special guest creatives, are to be highly commended for their efforts and output.
So, as the curtain closes for another year of the Starbound experience, thoughts now
progress to next year where its sweet sixteenth birthday awaits. And, as questions
arise over what musicals and numbers will make an appearance, it’s safe to say we
will all become witness to another superb spectacle.
